Academic Ensemble of Folk Dances and Songs “Sonja Marinković”

The Academic Ensemble of Folk Dances and Songs “Sonja Marinković” was founded in 1962 at the University of Novi Sad. With over 800 members, it brings together the youth through artistic expression while preserving the folk traditions of Serbia and the Balkans. The Ensemble includes folk dancers, tamburitza and folk orchestras, and vocal and instrumental soloists. Its repertoire features 30 choreographies based on authentic regional music, and costumes—some over 100 years old. The Ensemble has performed at numerous international festivals and received awards worldwide for its dedication to cultural heritage.

The mission of the Nádudvar Vocational High School of Folk Crafts and Dormitory is to pass on our people’s traditional knowledge, crafts, environmentally conscious living, spiritual and material heritage, to generations that have drifted away from it. Passing on these “heritage crafts” is not only a goal, but also a tool that fosters creative thinking and transforms how students relate to the objects, materials, natural environment, and society around them.

The school provides both secondary and adult education in its workshops. Masters and students work together, influence each other through the creative process, and jointly experience the power of creation. During the school’s 33 academic years, 33 students have received the “Young Master of Folk Art” title, 18 students have been awarded the “Prima Junior” prize in the folk art category, and all of their teachers hold titles such as “Master of Folk Art,” “Young Master of Folk Art,” or are recognized folk applied artists.

“Vásárfia” Gingerbread

Vásárfia is the family business of Anna Pető, a gingerbread artist, run together with her husband, Zoltán Kiss, and their son, Milán Kiss, who is also a gingerbread artist. The family operates the Gingerbread Folk House in one of the most beautiful buildings in Mezőkövesd. In addition to offering products for sale, it provides a nostalgic experience where the old craft comes to life. Both artisans are members of the Matyó Folk Art Association, regularly winning awards and participating in fairs with their stunning creations.

The folk art of Békés County, including folk handicrafts, is rich and diverse. The preservation and continuation of the rural object-making culture is the mission of the Folk Art Association of Békés County, which currently has more than 400 members. Through its organizing and development work, the association creates creative communities, publishes materials, contributes to the exploration and promotion of the region’s values and traditions, and most importantly, provides a home for craft creators in Békéscsaba.

Together with the birds, we take flight, singing about more and more animal friends as we breeze through the once-rounded homeland. Starting in the far east, beyond the borders of historical Hungary – where even rivers are called “Szeret” – we travel west across the Danube, then to the Highlands, then to the Great Plain along the Tisza River, linger a while in the beautiful landscapes of Transylvania, and finally, under the same wide sky, we arrive once more among our Hungarian kin in Moldavia – where we all break into dance!

Mano & Gregor Band

A strange yet friendly bunch — Romania’s first indie folk band, debuted in 2022. Mano & Gregor was formed with the goal of introducing the widely known indie folk music genre to Romania within the framework of a high-quality musical production.

The group has made it their mission to bring music off the stage and directly to the audience. Besides performing on large stages, they are frequently spotted in unexpected places such as on the street, in trams, shops, or even museums, brightening the days of workers and passers-by alike.

One of the band’s frontmen, Botond Ráduly (“Manó”), is already a familiar name on the Transylvanian music scene, having reached the final stages of both Vocea României and X-Factor. The other frontman, Gergő Petri, is known from the bands Selfish Murphy and Whisperblast. As the frontman of Selfish Murphy, he toured in 14 countries — a journey that also influenced the musical direction of the Mano & Gregor project.

Our Lord is a Golden Lamb

In the dance tale performance Our Lord is a Golden Lamb by the Guliba Company, the story of The Lamb with Golden Fleece is brought to life. Traditional Hungarian folk dances and songs are accompanied by playful nursery rhymes, enriching the narrative. The set includes a cart made using two wagon wheels, which appears in many roles throughout the story.

The soul-liberating moments of village life: dancing, singing and making music. This joy knows no age, it makes sorrow fade, breathes life into the weary, balances the soul. In their newest performance, the ensemble evokes this ancient power that touches both the body and the soul, showcasing the rich cultural diversity and inexhaustible folklore of the Carpathian Basin. The audience should be prepared for: the overwhelming force of folk dance, which still resonates with today’s people, and the joy it brings can be easily felt by everyone.
