“ The Szeged slipper has no match” – History behind the Szeged Slipper – Exhibition Opening
Tibor Sallai comes from a family of traditional slipper makers – his great-grandfather and uncle were also craftsmen of this trade, so from an early age, he was surrounded by the magic of shoemaking. However, he only began to pursue this craft seriously in 1980. Over the years, he has deepened his knowledge of the production and history of the Szeged slipper and enjoys designing new models as well.
Traditional Szeged slippers are made of velvet, embroidered by hand, and crafted exclusively from natural materials: cotton velvet, upper leather, leather lining, leather sole, and a wooden heel.
In recognition of his outstanding craftsmanship, he was awarded the title of „Folk Applied Artist” in 2022. This August, visitors in Subotica will have the opportunity to admire his unique creations in person.
