Since 2002, the Hungarian Cultural Centre Népkör in Subotica has been the founder and organiser of the Interetno Festival. Interetno is a place of great encounters, where the strongest attraction is the sense of community. Culture, tradition, cultural values – these three concepts characterise one of the most important traditional events in Vojvodina. From the very beginning, the festival has been developing step by step, with a high level of dedication and commitment to the importance of folklore and folk art, with dance groups and bands performing original folk music and folk dance at a high level. Although the festival started as a one-day event, over the years it has grown into a full-scale artistic programme. As an all-arts festival, the event features music, dance and theatre, as well as craft traditions.

From 2019, the festival is organised under the professional auspices of UNESCO and the International Council of Folklore Festivals and Folklore Organizations as an official partner of UNESCO. The Interetno Festival has been awarded the status of “CIOFF International Festival” according to the rules of the International Council of Organizations of Folklore Festivals and Folk Arts (CIOFF). Only two festivals in Serbia have this certification.
